The present UK family allowance or child benefit was introduced in 1977, replacing the earlier family allowances and child tax allowances. Under the present scheme, any eligible parent or guardian is entitled to monetary benefits, if they are responsible for a child less than 16 years, or less than 20 years, if the child is continuing in an approved education or training programme.
An individual is entitled to family allowance of £20.70 per week for the first child and £13.70 a week for any further children. A family with two children can therefore claim nearly £1,800 a year. Only one person is entitled to benefit for one child.
Calling the Family Allowance contact number
In January 2013, the government introduced a high income charge, effectively stopping the allowance for families where either parent or guardian has an income over £50,000. Such families could opt to stop receiving payments, or pay back some or all of the payments through the tax system. Those not opting for the benefits may still find it prudent to fill the claim form, to get National Insurance credits that count towards State Pension, and to ensure the child is registered to get a National Insurance number when they turn 16 years.
Applying for Family Allowance over the phone
To claim family allowance, the person making the claim needs to fill up claim form CH2 and send it to the Child Benefit Office, Washington, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE88 1ZD, with the birth certificate or adoption certificate of the child. The claim may be made as soon as the child is born or when the child comes to live with the applicant, and can even be backdated up to three months. The processing takes about 12 weeks. The scheme is administered by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
